The difference between dry forming and wet forming of carbon Fiber

Carbon fiber has very low density, but very high strength, and has the advantage of high temperature resistance.In the field of the production of carbon fiber products, there are dry carbon fiber and wet carbon fiber, this distinction should be shown from the production process of carbon fiber products. The two most commonly used processing methods of carbon fiber composites are prepreg hot pressing tank molding mode and vacuum introduction mode.

Due to the difference in the way of infiltration in the use of cloth, there is a reflection of dry and wet. At present, the mainstream formula of carbon fiber composites is carbon fiber and resin composite, there are two ways of combination of the two materials. In the field of carbon fiber materials, there is a combination of resin and fiber called prepreg. In the industry, the way of using prepreg to process products is called dry molding, and other non-prepreg methods are called wet process. At present, the vacuum resin molding method is the main method of wet process, and the prepreg hot pressing tank molding process is the main performance of dry molding.

The main step of the vacuum introduction process is to arrange the carbon fiber cloth in the prefabricated mold and to combine the resin with the carbon fiber in the mold with vacuum pressure. this method is fast and low cost, but the material proportion is difficult to be precisely controlled. it is difficult to control the quality and precision of the products. Because the prepreg begins to infiltrate with resin during the production of carbon fiber cloth, the combination is better and the proportion control precision is higher, and the product quality and precision are higher after high temperature and high pressure molding.

There are obvious differences in the properties of the products produced by the two processes. The wet process is easy to deform and the truncated part is easy to be de-filtered, and the combination of resin and fiber is poor, and oxidation discoloration is easy to occur because of contact with air. The dry prepreg process does not have the above situation, but the performance is easy to degrade under ultraviolet radiation.

The carbon fiber products produced by these two production methods are obviously different in weight and hardness, so they are called “wet carbon fiber” and “dry carbon fiber” in order to distinguish them. Compared with dry carbon fiber, the carbon fiber lines of wet carbon fiber will be deformed during vacuum, and carbon fiber filaments will be seen in its cross section, while it will not be seen on dry carbon fiber products.

The carbon fiber products made by dry process have good hardness and are easy to be processed by CNC, but the production cycle is long and the production cost is high. The cost of wet forming products is low, the production process is relatively simple, and the production efficiency of the process is high. In the current production of carbon fiber, dry molding is mainly used in the case of high precision and high quality, while wet molding is mainly used in appearance and mass production.
