What’s the difference between Titanium Alloy and Aluminum Alloy?

Titanium alloy and aluminum alloy are one of the materials of metal hardware, but they’re different in may aspects.

Definition/Nature

Titanium Alloy: an alloy composed of other elements based on titanium. It has the advantages of low density, high specific strength, good corrosion resistance and good technological performance, so it is an ideal structural material for aerospace engineering.

Aluminum Alloy: an alloy based on aluminum and adding a certain amount of other alloying elements. it is one of the light metal materials and has better physical and mechanical properties than pure aluminum.

Feature

Titanium Alloy:

1. High strength and low density:the density of titanium alloy is generally about 4.5g/cm3, only 60% of that of steel.

2. High thermal strength: the temperature is hundreds of degrees higher than that of aluminum alloy, and the required strength can be maintained at medium temperature.

4. Good corrosion resistance: titanium alloy works in humid atmosphere and sea water, and its corrosion resistance is much better than that of stainless steel.

5. The process performance is poor, cutting is difficult, in hot working, it is very easy to absorb hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and other impurities, as well as poor wear resistance, complex production process and so on.

Aluminum Alloy:

1. The density is low: the density is 2.63 × 2.85g / cm, which is about the same as that of copper (8.9) or steel (7.8). Low density can save moving and processing costs, reduce costs, and the more widely used in industrial, construction, civil and other fields.

2. Good corrosion resistance and weather resistance: aluminum and aluminum alloy can form a hard and dense oxide film with good corrosion resistance in the atmosphere. The corrosion resistance of aluminum can be further improved by surface treatment such as powder spraying.

3. Good decoration: good plasticity, can process various specifications, formed products, through surface treatment can produce different properties, different colors of the film, with good decoration.

4. Good thermal conductivity: high thermal conductivity, the same weight of aluminum is 12 times of iron, therefore, aluminum alloy is a good material for making radiators and heaters.

Application

Titanium Alloy: mainly used to make aircraft engine compressor components, followed by rockets, missiles and high-speed aircraft structures.

Aluminum Alloy: widely used in marine industry, chemical industry, aerospace, metal packaging, transportation and other fields.
